Avast, ye land lubbers! The Westfries Museum opened a new exhibit and does her best to provide it with publicity! For Piraten van de Lage Landen (Pirates of the Low Countries) Pictura hoisted the pirate flag as well and helped with an exciting website for children and photographs for an article in the Noord-Hollands Dagblad.

Soleyman Reis The romance of the pirate life has captured people's imaginations for centuries. It has done so also in Hoorn, residence of the famous Dutch pirate Sulayman Reis. Dirk de Veenboer from Hoorn operated as privateer for the Dutch Republic, but because it did not provide him with enough wealth, he decided to join the Barbary Corsairs. They operated from the North African coast, then part of the Ottoman Empire. When he converted to the islam, Dirk was made Admiral of the Turkish empire by the Ottoman sultan. Since then, he was known as Sulayman Reis. Claas Compaen Aside from Dirk, there were other pirates during the 17th century with colorful names such as Grote Pier, Houtebeen (Peg Leg) and the Dancer. Piet Hein and Claas Compaen also belonged to these infamous privateers of old. Claes Compaen was born in the second half of the Eighty Years' War and learned his seamanship on privateers. At the end of his carreer as a privateer he had conquered more than three hundred and fifty ships. No wonder, then, that he is the main character on the exhibit website of the Westfries Museum. He guides children through adventurous questions towards a special access code for the exhibit, allowing them to hunt for a real pirate treasure!
