For almost a century these books bundled the heads of the families in Alkmaar in an alphabetical list, mentioning their address and profession. Thanks to the Newspaper Viewer, the powerful tool Pictura customized for the Regionaal Archief Alkmaar, visitors of the website of the regional archive can now view and search through the address books online. The Newspaper Viewer shows razor sharp scans of the original address books and offers the option to search through the text with a flexible search engine. It will present the data from several editions in the results of a single search query. This way, editions can easily be compared with one another and a clear picture is painted of the changes that the population of Alkmaar underwent in that period.
